FULCRUM
Educational workspaces provide great hands-on learning opportunities to students, but they are also difficult to manage.
FULCRUM is an IOT system designed to address the most commonly observed problems in such workspaces.
POOR ORGANIZATION
HARD-TO-FIND ITEMS
POTENTIAL DAMAGE
My intention was to downsize warehouse management software for educational facilities.
Currently, Milwaukee has an RFID tag-based systems for managing hardware, but it is not easy to implement and does not have features for students and educators.
To consider the needs of various potential users, I interviewed several staff members at students at my University’s design lab, and categorized there interests.
I listed out the user needs and the components that would be nesseacry for the system.
I then mapped a concept for the system.
IDEATION
Initially, I had considered designing new types of storage units that maximized efficiency and ease for users.
I then shifted my focus to RFID-centered components that could be installed into pre-existing storage systems, which would be a much easier and less costly installation.
I then switched to a cleaner design utilizing experimental ranged RFID reading technology. It would adhere to the inside of a storage unit.
My idea was to design a flexible matt RFID reader that could line the inside of a drawer or cabinet
The Fulcrum system needed a digital app to access its tool library and locating features.
Several protoypes where made in Figma to determine ideal layout, hierarchy and button designs

FINAL DESIGN
RFID Readers adhere inside a storage unit with command strips and are powered by a rechargable battery. A row of lights indicate charge.
RFID Tags zip tie around tools. Tags track location and will log use automatically if removed from storage.
A user manually log use by scanning the QR code on the tag’s divot.
A gateway unit connects all the fulcrum components to the app; It plugs into a PC via USB cord.
Indicators wirelessly connect to the readers and provide a quick display of a unit’s contents. The light on the device directs users searching for tools.
FINAL APPLICATION
A manager can easily view shop inventory and information about each tool.
Tools are easy to add, and the app includes a vertual unit builder allowing shop owners to create 1:1 representations of their storage spaces.
The app keeps track of damage alerts, tool reservations, use.
The mobile app lets users find items, learn about and reserve them, locate them with AR, and scan tag codes to log usage.
The Fulcrum system streamlines educational workshop activities by cutting down the time spent searching for items and reducing the risk of potential damage.
STYLE GUIDE
Fulcrum’s VBL and logo are intended to evoke strength, balance and leverage.
This reflects the company’s software that helps organize, enable and maintain.
